Lunch and learn: CPD-accredited seminars designed for healthcare professionals

In a drive to help healthcare professionals with their continued professional development (CPD), Nutricia Early Life Nutrition has created a set of new CPD-accredited educational presentations, written by independent experts. These are the latest addition to our suite of resources designed to facilitate more informed conversations with mums-to-be and parents, and support assessment and management of common infant feeding concerns during the first 1,000 days.

Emma Callan, Community Account Manager within Nutricia Early Life Nutrition’s Solutions team, explains: “Working within a constantly evolving NHS brings many challenges to our healthcare professionals (HCPs) and can also mean that time is becoming an increasingly precious and scarce resource, leading to many HCPs having to achieve their learning credits in their own free time.”

Emma continues: “With these Lunch and Learn presentations, Nutricia Early Life Nutrition can provide a flexible learning platform where GPs can gain practical insights with CPD-accredited learning during their working day. Providing our HCPs with practical education such as stepped approaches and red flags means they can help ensure parents with young children receive the best support and right advice no matter where they are on their patient journey.”

These CPD-accredited presentations can be delivered to any number of people, at any time and at any place. Our goal is to provide inspiring Lunch and Learn nutrition training that will help busy HCPs further their knowledge base, in and out of surgery hours.

There will be three Lunch and Learn presentations available in summer 2018. Each presentation begins with nutrition within the first 1,000 days and every presentation has been created by an expert in the relevant field, from Nutricia Early Life Nutrition’s steering committee. This committee is formed of a group of seven leading healthcare professionals from different disciplines, and has been put together to ensure that the education we are delivering is as relevant and useful as possible. Within the 30 minute presentations there will be educational slides, informative videos and case studies to help HCPs support parents.

Our Lunch and learn presentations:

1. Diagnosis and management of food allergy in infants, with a focus on cow’s milk allergy

In this presentation we take a look at what constitutes a food allergy (as opposed to a food intolerance), including the impact of food allergies within the critical first 1,000 days; the prevalence of food allergies in infants and the key signs and symptoms; a focus on diagnosis and nutritional management of cow’s milk allergy; breastfeeding and weaning infants with cow’s milk allergy.

Owen Bull, Nutricia Early Life Nutrition Account Manager, explains: “This CPD Tool has been pioneered by an expert Consultant Allergist using evidence based guidelines and research. It is a great tool to empower healthcare professionals to understand diagnosing cow’s milk allergy and its significance in infant health.”

2. Understanding the nutritional needs of the preterm infant

Covering the nutritional and growth challenges faced by preterm infants due to immature gut and low nutrient stores; how and why nutritional needs differ between term and preterm infants; the benefits of breastfeeding in preterm infants; and providing parental support.

3. Diagnosis and management of common gastrointestinal complaints in infants

From parental concerns and anxiety, and the possible impact on the family, to a detailed breakdown of the key symptoms and red flags to watch out for, this thorough briefing helps healthcare professionals in the diagnosis and management of common gastrointestinal complaints in infants.

A helping hand for healthcare professionals

“Our role at Nutricia Early Life Nutrition is to help healthcare professionals help their patients,” Laura from the Nutricia ELN Solutions team explains. “In 2017 we helped over 200 healthcare professionals attend events and gain educational grants — registering through eln.nutricia.co.uk — but we want to open this up to more healthcare professionals.”

In addition to the lunch and learn presentations there are also detailed print materials on allergy support, common feeding problems, the importance of calcium, weaning fact sheets and more practical tools like our Baby Symptom Checker.

Building on our print materials are our e-learning modules which can be accessed on our website. Each module counts towards CPD and is designed to help healthcare professionals deepen their knowledge of infant nutrition and common feeding problems, enabling healthcare professionals to advise parents with confidence.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Breastfeeding is best for babies. Infant formula is suitable from birth when babies are not breastfed. Follow-on milk is only for babies over 6 months, as part of a mixed diet and should not be used as a breastmilk substitute before 6 months. We advise that all formula milks including the decision to start weaning should be made on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian, pharmacist or other professional responsible for maternal and child care. Foods for special medical purposes should only be used under medical supervision. May be suitable for use as the sole source of nutrition for infants from birth, and/or as part of a balanced diet from 6–12 months. Refer to label for details.
